Claimed by Fangs and Darkness by Maggie Sunseri is a spectacular romantasy that explores trauma and the spirit of revolution through the lens of vampires and witches. It’s the second book in the Everlasting Possession duet. It follows Marked by Masks and Secrets, a book I absolutely loved.
I received an advanced reader copy from the author and was able to review this book before its official release.
*This review contains spoilers for the first book in the duet, Marked by Masks and Secrets*
An unimaginable tragedy has Kylo and Evie reeling, trying to put back together what has been broken. The tyrannical born vampires and the sycophants that follow them have gone too far, and it’s high time for the turned clans to fight back.
Evie, a powerful chaos witch, is an essential piece of this brewing revolution. Aided by the power of a goddess, she’s done things that should be impossible, but nothing compares to what she and her allies will have to do to win the impending war in Etherdale.
With war on the horizon, Evie and Kylo must confront their painful pasts and their worst fears. Faced with hard choices and even harder betrayals, it’s clear that no matter how strong they are, revolution is never easy.
Evie truly comes into her power in this book, literally and figuratively, making an incredible evolution from the first book. Her journey takes her from an intensely anxious girl, used to making herself as small as possible, to a brave woman who is unafraid to speak up and speak her truth.
There is a wonderful, joyous found family element in Claimed by Fangs and Darkness. Kylo, Evie, Idris, and the inner circle of their clan are utterly devoted to each other, and it gives them something to fight for. On the other hand, this book also gives us new villains that reach new levels of unhinged evil for the witches, the mortals, and the turned.
there would always be those who ignorantly fought against their own interests, whether because they thought they were preserving their place in the wealth and power hierarchy, or they’d succumbed to the borns’ asinine propaganda machine, it was hard to say. Usually a mix of both.
Evie and Kylo have an overwhelming, intense, and unyeilding kind of love, which is exactly what Evie needs to heal from the trauma that’s shaped her from her childhood and into her adult life.
Their intense love leads to plentiful spice, even amid such an action-packed plot. Like the other books in this universe, there is overt kink and BDSM involved, written in a way that shows the healing power of these practices. As much as this book is spicy, though, it’s not the only main focus.
From the first few pages, Maggie Sunseri sets the tone for this book with a deeply emotional scene that had me near tears. There is a deep catharsis infused in this story that plays perfectly with the themes of healing, survival, and revolution.
This is a romantasy, with incredible characters and all the beloved tropes and elements that make romance so much fun to read, but there is also powerful, revolutionary rhetoric infused into the pages of this story.
It is a revolutionary act to stay in your home despite the threat from oppressors. To continue to laugh and take strolls and steal joy and orgasms and acts of indulgence, small and large. To refuse to live in fear is radical. I will dance and make art. I will fill vases with fresh cut flowers, and I will make my bed every morning.
Claimed by Fangs and Darkness is a heartwarming and powerful story that doesn’t shy away from the darkness. It is an important reminder that reading romantasy is indeed a revolutionary act. To read books like this is resistance.
The ending of the book definitely left the door open for future stories in this world, especially as it tied in with the characters in Eternal Obsessions in an amazing way. I loved every page of this book and I can only hope that I get to return to the vampires and witches of Ravenia someday soon. Claimed by Fangs and Darkness hits the shelves on August 30th, 2025.
