*This piece contains minor spoilers for the A Court of Thorns and Roses, Crescent City, and Throne of Glass series’.*
Sarah J. Maas is fully dominating the romantasy space right now, and when you’re at the top the rumors are always swirling. This time the whispers are about what might be coming next in the Maasverse, and fans are speculating that in addition to the existing series’ she’s working on, a brand new series called Twilight of the Gods just might be in the works.
Maas is under contract for 7 new books with her publisher, and she has confirmed that the next will be the 6th book in the A Court of Thorns and Roses series. A 4th book in the Crescent City series is also confirmed but with no announcement on where that stands in the timeline. As for what’s next after ACOTAR book 6, fans are left guessing, and some of them have some ideas.
“There’s one book that I’m going to be writing after this next ‘ACOTAR’ book that I’m very excited about. I’m not going to say what world it’s in. I’m not going to say anything,” she told TODAY.com. “But it’s a story that’s been brewing in the back of my mind for a long time. … I think it’s going to be a very emotional book for me to write just in terms of the world I’ll be writing and the characters that might pop up.”
After Maas gave this hint in an interview, fans started speculating that Maas might possibly debut a new series. In 2015, Maas started a Pinterest board labeled “Twilight of the Gods” which has now been taken down, but featured images of Valkyries, female Thor figures, and some Sailor Moon imagery.
The title Twilight of the Gods might potentially refer to Ragnarök, a story in Norse mythology in which Gods and monsters from across all the worlds came together and fought a battle at the end of the world.
Given the recent crossovers between ACOTAR and the Crescent City series, the idea of a great battle fought between the major players in all the various worlds that Maas has built is both seemingly possible and understandably very exciting for fans.
Over the course of all her series’ Maas has built formidable characters and equally formidable villains. The speculation is that Aelin, Nesta, and Bryce (or some other combination of characters) along with their mates will band together to fight the remaining Asteri, or the evil Valg from the Throne of Glass series.
The potential involvement of the Throne of Glass universe was hinted at throughout the third Crescent City book, so maybe that series isn’t quite over yet either.
The Valkyries, a band of female warriors who fought in great battles in Prythian, and my favorite part of A Court of Silver Flames, are taken from Norse mythology. It would make sense that if this new series has something to do with the great final battle of Norse mythology, this band of female warriors that Nesta built would play a significant role.
There are other potential callbacks to Norse mythology throughout Maas’ books — giving this wild speculation a solid leg to stand on. We do love an easter egg. As far as fan theories go, we can never be quite sure what to trust, and Maas does love to keep her readers on their toes. But I think there is a good chance a new series is coming our way, and it just might be Twilight of the Gods.
