Age-gap romances are stories in which one member of the relationship is older than the other, usually by a pretty significant gap. Usually, it’s the man that’s older, but there are also reverse age-gaps on this list where the woman in the relationship is the older one. All of these books happen to feature heterosexual romances, which is where this trope is usually found. Age gaps are incredibly popular in the romance novel universe because love is love and age is just a number. These are some of the best age-gap romances I’ve read so far.
Birthday Girl by Penelope Douglas

I’ve talked about Birthday Girl before because it’s one of my favorites that I think every romance reader would enjoy. 19-year-old Jordan finds herself living with her ex-boyfriend and his father, and she begins to notice how much better the father treats her than the son ever did. This is a slow-burn romance that handles the age gap very well and gives readers a satisfying happily ever after. It’s sweet, it’s spicy, and it tugs on the heartstrings in all the right ways.

Kill Switch by Penelope Douglas

I love The Devil’s Night series with a passion. These books are a little dark, a little twisted, and a lot hot. Kill Switch in particular is a masterpiece for any fan of dark romance. A blind ballerina, a bad boy, and a whole host of secrets and lies that the two have to work through to get their happy ending. The characters in this book are so interesting and unique, and while I would not want to meet Damon alone in a dark alley, he is simply perfect within the pages of a book.
This age gap is significantly smaller than some of the others on this list. These two follow the yearbook rule, or at least get close enough to get away with it, but I’m still counting it because their age is definitely an issue for them. Kill Switch is a dark new adult romance, with enemies-to-lovers themes and a unique plot and premise that will stick in your mind for a very long time.

Pucking Wild by Emily Rath

Pucking Wild is a reverse age gap hockey romance, which means the heroine is the one who is older than the hero. She’s also curvy, with an amazing multi-faceted personality. He’s a hockey player on the Jacksonville Rays, once again the most sexually adventurous hockey team of all time, and has the personality of a golden retriever. One of the best romances of 2023, this book is super spicy but has excellent character building and a plot that will keep you hooked between the spicy scenes.

What Was Meant To Be by Q.B. Tyler

If you are looking for an age gap that is deeply taboo bordering on (or diving fully into, depending on your perspective) the uncomfortable, then Q.B. Tyler is your author. What Was Meant To Be is a forbidden romance where a woman falls for her father’s best friend, who happens to have known her since she was a baby. It’s a short read, and most of the plot centers around the relationship itself and its complicated dynamics, but it’s perfect for something quick and intensely spicy that feels a little naughty just to have in your Kindle library.

Praise by Sara Cate

Praise is the book that really launched Sara Cate onto the map, with all of BookTok sharing endless spicy quotes from the pages. Charlie goes to speak with her ex-boyfriend’s father, to handle a financial issue. He’s the owner of a sex club and mistakes her for his latest submissive. Within these pages, there are lots and lots of “good girls” and other praise kink related goodness, and if that’s your thing, this book is for you.

Highest Bidder by Sara Cate

He’s filthy rich. She waitresses at a sex club he frequents. She’s up for auction for a date, and he’s got all the money in the world to bid on her. But she’s too young for him, not to mention all the secrets she’s keeping. Highest Bidder is another installment in Sara Cate’s Salacious Players’ Club series, all following the same sex club and its employees and customers. I was surprised by how sweet this book turned out to be, and having something that comes off with that level of care and emotion all while incorporating the whole silver fox daddy-dom thing is a feat indeed.

Ward Willing by Amanda Richardson

Ward Willing is an age-gap, BDSM romance where a billionaire college professor falls in love with his young ward, his best-friend’s daughter. Liam is a Pleasure Dom and Zoe is a fierce, independent woman who loves to challenge him. This book is undoubtedly one of the best contemporary romances of 2024 already, and it is deviously kinky, sometimes sweet, and truly the best of the genre.

The Wicked by Rosie Alice

The Wicked is a reverse age gap student-teacher romance, but don’t worry, this isn’t a May December situation. Hayden, the male protagonist, is eighteen at the beginning of the story, and more than capable of holding his own with Penelope. This book is the most emotionally intense work of Alice’s yet, and it will break your heart into tiny little pieces before putting them back together again. Hayden and Penelope walk over broken glass barefoot for their happily ever after, but it makes for an incredibly satisfying read.

Sinner by Sierra Simone

His best friend’s little sister is training to be a nun, but Sean is going to show her what she’s missing before she says her vows. Not to be cliché, but this book is sinfully spicy and such a great story. The way Simone plays with faith and sexuality is so interesting, and at times truly heartbreaking. Both of these characters are so easy to love and so easy to root for, you spend every page of Sinner just dying for more of their love. Devout Catholics beware, but for the rest of us, this book is an all-time romance great.

Fierce Betrayal + Fierce Obsession by Sadie Kincaid

The second half of the LA Ruthless series features an age-gap relationship between an adopted mafia princess and her father’s best friend and enforcer. She’s also a single mom. In Fierce Betrayal and Fierce Obsession, Jax earns his place in the book boyfriend hall of fame. The deliciousness of this man knows no bounds, and for that alone, these books are worth reading. You don’t need to read the whole series to understand these books, and they are so much fun to read.
