A Touch of Chaos by Scarlett St. Clair is the final installment to her Hades x Persephone saga, and readers have been waiting for years for the conclusion to this epic story with bated breath. This series is one of hard-won love, epic battles, and ancient myths. In a perfect conclusion, A Touch of Chaos captures all the magic of the rest of the series in a stunningly satisfying way.
The penultimate book of the Hades x Persephone saga ended on a cliffhanger, and I’ve been waiting patiently for the last installment ever since. As a result, I was slightly lost at the beginning of this final piece of the story. I absolutely should have done a reread before diving in, but the author did a remarkable job of interweaving important details from the previous books, so I caught up quickly.
In this book, readers can expect fantasy elements in a fictional but contemporary world, where mortals are caught in a war between the gods and the demigods. It’s very different from my other favorite Greek myth retelling series, Dark Olympus by Katee Robert, but stays true to elements of the ancient myths in a similar way.
The relationship between Persephone and Hades and the interference between the two from her mother is pulled directly from the myths, as well as the relationships between the rest of the gods, and the details with Ariadne and the labyrinth. It is an entirely new story, in an entirely new world, but it is clear the author had a deep knowledge and respect for the source material.
At the beginning of this saga, Persephone is a powerless goddess, living in secret in the mortal world, controlled by her domineering mother Demeter. She writes about the abuse of power by the rest of the gods for a magazine, which often gets her in hot water. One night in the first book, she finds herself in a nightclub owned by Hades, God of the Underworld, making a deal with him. As their relationship progresses, New Athens faces a new threat from a group known as the Triad.
One of my favorite aspects of this series that really comes to fruition in this book is that Persephone’s anger fuels her power. It’s a detail I absolutely love in a world that shies away from feminine rage. It not only sends a powerful message, but it makes the character feel real and relatable despite her status as a literal goddess.
Unlike the rest of the series, the final book has multiple point-of-views that allow readers to see things from both Hades’ and Persephone’s perspectives as well as the villain, Theseus, and other characters like Dionysus. It’s a nice touch that really makes the book feel well-rounded and complete.
It’s in truly desperate situations in romance novels where the character’s love for and dedication to each other really shines and this series has always captured that, but A Touch of Chaos takes it to a whole new level.
No matter what hell Hades and Persephone are put through, they remain utterly devoted to each other, even when they are facing moments of insecurity in their relationship. They fight, they have real feelings, but they never cease to find that love.
My baseline spice level has just risen dramatically since 2022, but the first half of this book was less spicy than I expected. Then the halfway mark hits and the heat picks up with reckless abandon.
By the time I got through the first few chapters of A Touch of Chaos and gained my footing, I was completely enmeshed in Hades and Persephone. This series was one of the first I read when I started reading romance again after a long break, and it will always hold a special place in my heart for that.
