For the last several years, Hulu has been working on a television adaptation of Sarah J. Maas’ A Court of Thorns and Roses series, something that romantasy readers have been looking forward to with bated breath. But in early 2024, rumors swirled that the show had been scrapped. So Is an ACOTAR TV show coming someday?
A Court of Thorns and Roses presents a challenge to adapt to screen, like most sweeping fantasies. It would be incredibly expensive to build a show that properly captures the magic and lore of the series, and with a fanbase like the one ACOTAR has built, managing expectations is tricky. Shows like Game of Thrones have managed it, sort of, but it’s still an uphill battle for any studio.
Despite the rumors, no one at Hulu has confirmed the show is no longer in production. Ronald D. Moore, who was slated to be the show runner, has left the project. No new show runner has been announced yet, making it seem like the future of the show is tenuous, at best.
That said, with the right team, a successful adaptation is still possible. While some fans gave up after Hulu seemingly tabled the project, others were encouraged when a photo of Sarah J. Maas and Margot Robbie having coffee together hit the internet. The veracity of the photo was later confirmed by Robbie in an interview with Harper’s Baazar, in which Robbie said she would “see what [she] can do” about making the TV adaptation a reality.
A Margot Robbie and Sarah J. Maas combination is a dream team for the fans, but since that interview was published in September 2024, there has been no further news about Robbie’s potential involvement or the show as a whole.
We here at The Nora Theory think a potential ACOTAR TV show has far too much possibility to be scrapped forever. Hulu, or someone else, will make this show happen eventually. The fans want it badly, and there is a great deal of money to be made here. But we may all have to wait a while for the executives at Disney, Hulu’s parent company, to figure it all out. And then once they do, a show like this, if done properly, will take a long time to film, edit, and produce.
If it happens, the first season of an ACOTAR TV show likely won’t hit our screens until 2027 at the earliest. With any luck, 2025 will bring more news about the show’s future, and we can pray that fellow ACOTAR fan Margot Robbie can make this happen for all of us.
