*this review contains spoilers for Fourth Wing and Iron Flame*

At Basgiath War College, the dragon riders find themselves in the midst of a raging battle. The wards around the kingdom are falling, and the one around Basgiath itself is only reinforced through an enormous sacrifice. Danger is everywhere, and Violet is determined to risk whatever is necessary to save Xaden from his curse.

Violet’s quest will take her and her friends to new places, with new challenges. Nothing will stop her from trying to find Xaden a cure, even if her plan means keeping secrets, treason, and of course, violence. As the threat of the venin draws closer and more powerful, time is running out for both Xaden and the entire kingdom.

Like previous books, the story is told primarily from Violet’s point of view. In Onyx Storm, second-year cadet Violet continues to come into her power, and with her growing knowledge and control comes a growth in confidence as well. Her character development, watching her come into her own, even as she grieves, is what makes her such a compelling character.

Violet is forming and executing genius plans, albeit mildly insane ones, to save the people she loves, and the realm as a whole. It’s reminiscent of Aelin Ashryver Galathynius, the famed heroine of the Throne of Glass series, and I loved it. I ripped through every page waiting to see how these wild plans would work out.

Disability representation is central to this story and has been since the first book. It remains a present thread throughout Onyx Storm, extending in new ways. This disability representation infuses the story with a strength and empathy that’s part of what makes it truly special.

As inspiring as Violet’s character is through this book, Xaden’s is heartbreaking in equal measure. He spends much of this book fighting fiercely for control of himself but still manages to maintain the core of why we love him. He’s protective, sexy, and extremely powerful. Watching him pushed to the brink will keep his fans on the edge of their seats, holding back tears.

Despite their struggles, Violet and Xaden’s dynamic remains truly incredible. How they interact with each other is such a joy to read. The spice in this book is limited for plot-related reasons, but the sex scenes that do occur are passionate and near-perfect.

There are tons of twists and turns in the plot of Onyx Storm. This book will keep you on your toes. I audibly declared “holy shit” at least thrice over the course of reading this story. I was entirely engrossed in this world, at the neglect of all else.

A warning to all potential readers: Onyx Storm ends on a truly insane cliffhanger. It’s an intense ending that had me in tears that turned to full sobs. It just might wreck you but in the best way.

Onyx Storm is the third book out of a proposed five in the series. It will likely be a while before we find out what happens next with our favorite dragon riders. It will be an excruciating wait, but every minute will be worth it.
