The High Queen and her consorts are in a perilous position. Their war with the House of the Sun rages on, and a much more dangerous threat, one that has the potential to bring about the apocalypse lingers on the horizon.

Sophie has to learn her new role and quickly, and she needs to complete her harem to unleash her full power. Her reign and her magic are unprecedented, and the threats she and her consorts face are almost insurmountable. They will need to fight hard to survive.

In why choose books with this many love interests, it can be a little chaotic and hard to keep straight. Seven love interests is a big number.

Guardian of Blood and Shadow is told only from Sophie’s point-of-view. I wonder if the men’s perspectives were included, even briefly, if it would have shaped them a little more clearly.

Much like the last book in the series, these characters didn’t really connect with me. They’re all pretty typical why choose and fantasy archetypes, with nothing that makes them stand out. That said, the characters are not really the point here. It’s all about the sex and plot.

While this book lacks in some areas, the spice certainly isn’t one of them. We’ve got group sex, sword crossing, and some light dominance and submission.

Essentially every chapter has a sex scene. It is absolutely integral to the plot and story. Without it, there would be no book. This may bother some readers, but not this one.

This is a quick and easy, fast-paced read. It feels super short while reading, and despite certain lacking in depth, it’s undeniably entertaining.

The primary message of Guardian of Blood and Shadow seems to be that fucking will fix everything, which is fun. It ends on a cliffhanger with hopes of a satisfying conclusion in book three.

Verdict: It’s Fine
