Rogue’s mate has been stolen from him, and he will tear the world apart, and tear himself apart to get Ara back. Adonis, the mad king of Auryna, captured her, and no one knows whether she is dead or alive. Rogue spends months killing everyone who could possibly lead him to his mate.

Adonis messes with people’s minds, their memories, and he’s been doing it for decades. No one knows what his ultimate plan is, or why he captured Ara, but Rogue and his family know that he is the most dangerous opponent they have ever faced. It will take everything they have and more to try to stop him, to save the realm, and save themselves.

Rogue and Ara are among the all-star couples in the romantasy space for me, right up there with Nesta and Cassian. Through torture and tragedy, their love transcends circumstance in a way that is truly beautiful.

You will not shatter, because you’ve always been resilient, and you will not let someone like Adonis be the thing that breaks you. You’re far too strong for that, and you’re not alone. I don’t care if you press that blade to my throat a thousand times—it’ll be a thousand times I stand with you, beside you, behind you, wherever you need me. A thousand times I’ll stay with you. If we have to fight your demons together, we will. I can promise you that much.

J.D. Linton puts her characters through hell, and they are reckoning with impossible situations and horrifying traumas. She is incredibly skilled at weaving deep emotional connections between her characters that make her stories so very high stakes and so very meaningful.

The Last One Standing is not a super spicy read, there is a strong romance plot here, but the story is not driven by their sexual relationship. It doesn’t qualify as a typical slow burn because by now we know that Rogue and Ara are fated mates and their relationship is well established, but Rogue and Ara have a lot they need to handle before the spice can factor in.

In a 700+ page book, there’s naturally a lot going on here. There are lots of plot twists, all of them in keeping with the established themes of the series. Several of the twists I saw coming, but they were so beautifully executed that it didn’t matter.

Because of Adonis’ mental manipulations, there are many scenes early on in the book that feel very disjointed. This is clearly intentional, neither the characters nor the readers are meant to be quite sure what’s going on, but it was a little hard to follow. That said, it was completely necessary for the plot, and the confusion was short-lived.

The Last One Standing, and the Rogue x Ara series as a whole, will always have a special place in my heart. It has broken my heart and put it back together again with each and every book, in the best way possible. This series has such phenomenal magic in a world you can get lost in, and I can’t recommend it enough to all the romantasy readers out there.
