After the truly insane cliffhanger at the end of Watch Your Back, I couldn’t wait to read You’re Next, the third and final book in Tate James’ Devil’s Backbone series. With more campy hilarity involving rubber ducks mixed with delicious why choose dynamics and dangerous drama. You’re Next is the perfect conclusion to this exciting series.
*this review contains spoilers for the first two books in the series: Dear Reader and Watch Your Back.*
Committed to a mental hospital against her will, through a crushing betrayal and cruel trickery, Ashley is beginning to question her own sanity. Heath, Carter, and Royce have no idea where she went, and they’re pulling out all the stops to find her. They know Nate is hiding something, and they won’t stop until they find out what’s happened to the girl they love.
The conspiracy surrounding Devil’s Backbone and Nevaeh University is only getting worse. There’s an unhinged mad scientist after Ashley and her boys. They don’t know who to trust, and they don’t know what’s real — except for the love between them. They’re on the brink of losing everything, and her men will go to any lengths to keep Ashley safe.
Since this is the third book in the series, the readers know these characters well. They’re all a little over-the-top, but they feel like old friends. All the men have their roles and play their parts well, and Ashley is a lovely mix of strength and softness.
You’re Next is the spiciest book of the series, with new, deliciously hot dynamics and some attempted murder as foreplay. There’s some light BDSM, but mostly just fun and passionate scenes and wild group activities.
This book had me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. It’s a page turner that I tore through like an amazing dessert. There’s a clear and accessible plot and worldbuilding, with plenty of drama to keep any reader engaged.
You’re Next strikes the perfect balance between wild playfulness and emotional sincerity. This series is the perfect read for long-time fans of Tate James and readers new to her world of colorful why choose romances alike.
