Vasmora by Keri Lake is the third and final book in The Eating Woods trilogy, a gorgeous and expansive dark romantasy set in a dark world of magic, mad men, and vengeful gods.
*This review contains spoilers for the first two books in the series, Anathema and Eldritch.*
Maevyth is the key to saving Aetheria from destruction forged by hungry gods and cruel kings. Everyone wants her and the power she possesses to achieve their own nefarious ends. Now, she’s trapped under the control of a sadistic general who wants nothing more than to see her suffer, with no hope of escape.
Zevander will stop at nothing to save his mate from their tormentor. There is no vengeance too violent in pursuit of her rescue. With a plague threatening everything they hold dear, they must escape the worst of villains and face down certain peril. The power of their love is unquestionable, but not even that can conquer death.
Vasmora is very story-driven. After all the expansive character development of Anathema and Eldritch, the author put all her energy into putting Maevyth and Zevander through all manner of insanity to reach their happily ever after.
This book is all plot and dramatic action, with ample fight scenes and danger around every turn. It’s also a long one. The length feels a bit excessive at times, but necessary to conclude this wide-reaching tale.
There are some gory details included here. Parts of this read like a horror novel, and it is very creepy for those, like me, who fear spiders. It’s well-written, putting a visceral kind of fear in the reader with its decadent descriptions.
The spice scenes in Vasmora are sparing, but where they appear, they are impeccable. Passionate, intense, and perfectly well-written. Maevyth and Zevander are two characters so perfectly crafted for each other, and it makes for sex scenes that are just marvelous to read.
You’re mine, moon witch.” His gaze fell on my lips again. “I claimed you before you were born, and I will love you until the last star fades from the sky.”
All seems hopeless for most of this book, but the happy ending, hard-fought, is a beautiful conclusion to this series. For such a dark story, Vasmora had such a satisfying, lovely ending that gave the whole story a golden glow. I loved this series, and I can’t wait to see what Keri Lake does next.
