Couple to Throuple is Peacock’s latest foray into the reality TV universe. It’s a dating show in which couples head to a resort to find themselves a third. At the end of each week, they can stay with their chosen person or swap for another one of the available singles. Predictably, it is so messy.

The couples embody all the archetypes you would expect to find on a polyamorous dating show: the straight couple just trying to have a threesome (in the most convoluted manner possible, apparently), the lovable gays, the couple who is just there to stir shit up, and the couple who looks exactly like what you imagine when you think of polyamory.

The singles are significantly more normal, on this show to get tacked onto a dysfunctional couple. Like any dating show, the vast majority of these singles are shockingly good-looking, although none look quite like Megan Fox. They also unquestionably get the short end of the stick. These singles seem, at least to some of the couples, an entertainment at best and completely disposable at worst. It’s certainly a different side of polyamory than the side that romance novels portray. Maybe a more realistic one.

Every single one of these couples and throuples was problematic in their own special ways, and it makes for excellent television. Even the throuples you’re rooting for are verified passengers on the hot mess express. Jealousy abounds, feelings run high, and no one is behaving like a rational adult.
