*this review contains spoilers for the first three books in the Scorpion Kings series*

Morpheus Calloway is gone, but Juliet isn’t out of the woods yet. She and the Scorpion Kings have no idea who killed him, and they’re worried Juliet is next.

All the unanswered questions and unpredictable developments in Silverwood have the Scorpion Kings desperate to keep Juliet safe in a world that seems to only want her to suffer.

With a few months until graduation, when they can finally leave town, the Scorpion Kings are ready to handle their unfinished business. But with so many dangerous players still left on the board, it’s going to be a fight every step of the way.

There has been real character development from all four of the main characters from the first book in the series to this one. They all show an emotional vulnerability, and their walls have come down, which allows the reader to feel like we really know them.

Lex is my favorite one of the Scorpion Kings. It definitely feels like I’ve read the rest of these characters before in other why choose romances, but Lex had a twist on him that made him feel new, and his love for Juliet, while obsessive, was also so sweet.

The Hate We Breathe features significantly fewer spice scenes than the prior books in the series. With such a focus on the plot and tying up the loose ends there, it felt like there wasn’t space for the sexy moments, and I found myself missing them.

Despite this lack, the story is well-paced and engaging. The plot moves fast and is definitely the main driver of this story. The story itself is a version of one I’ve read time and time again. There’s nothing particularly unique about it, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a ton of fun to read.

Overall, The Hate We Breathe was a satisfying conclusion to the series, even though it fell short on spice. The way the threads of the story came together made for an amusing end to an entertaining series.

Verdict: It’s a Fun Ride
