Bitten and Bound is a three-book trilogy that promises vampires, political intrigue, and top-notch smut. I discovered this series on Reddit, where a user claimed it was the spiciest book they read in 2024, and despite my less that stellar success rate with Reddit recommendations, I decided the promises of extremely spicy vampires and political intrigue was worth the risk, and the gamble paid off.
A half-vampire in a human court, Given has spent her entire life suppressing her true nature. Her brother, the king of the human territory, is the only family she has. When Roland forces her across the Rift between the two kingdoms to serve in the court of the vampire king, Given is shocked and devastated.
But in Nor Doru, the vampire kingdom, King Laurent and his general Varick introduce Given to a life without shame for her vampire side. Just as she’s beginning to settle in, political machinations, intrigue, and betrayals threaten Given’s newfound freedom and the safety of the realm as a whole.
The first book in the series is heavily spice-driven and focused on setting up the dynamics that will weave the plot in the second and third books. The second and third books expand significantly on the world building and magical systems and focus more on the plot, although there is still significant spice in these pages.
I would not be surprised if this trilogy ends up being one of the spiciest books on my list this year, even if it’s only January. The smut here is incredibly well done. It’s passionate and delightfully kinky.
Given, Laurent, and Varick fall into fairly classic MMF romance roles. Given is sweet and kind, with undiscovered powers often found in romantasy heroines. Laurent is a smooth and sharp submissive king, literally. He has all kinds of inner demons and a thing for punishment. Varick is a broody and brawny dominant with monsters in his past that he vanquishes with complete control. The three of them together are absolutely delicious to read.
The MMF polyamorous dynamics are reminiscent of Sierra Simone’s New Camelot trilogy, which is one of my all-time favorites. There are some significant flips in the dynamics, but the same sensual BDSM. However, the tone and overall vibe are obviously wildly different because, well, vampires.
I read this book for the spice, which absolutely delivered, but was pleasantly surprised by the engaging plot and fascinating world filled with vampires and expansive political intrigue. With heartbreaking moments and incredible drama, the Bitten and Bound trilogy was an unexpected read in the best way.
